Homework will be regularly posted on this page.  If you are having any problems either viewing or printing, please contact the School Office.

Birch Class (Year 5 & 6)

As children progress into Year 5/6 we feel it is important to encourage independence and a greater sense of accountability for completing and returning their homework.  This will also ensure that, in relation to homework as much as to other aspects, their transition to Secondary School is as smooth as possible.
 
If children Do Not complete homework on time, they will be given time and space during the school day to complete it, and therefore may miss part of lunchtime or breaktime.
 

IMPORTANT – Please log into your Google account over the weekend with the login details supplied and let the office know if you are experiencing difficulties.

Please can we ask you to help your child with the homework as this is a good way of helping to reinforce what the children have been learning in school.

English Homework – The children have been working on the ‘Past Tense’ within their English lessons.  Please can you ask your child to write some sentences in the ‘Past Tense’ about something they have done over the weekend.  Year 1 – 3 sentences and Year 2 – 5 sentences, please.

Reading – please can we remind you to write in your child’s Reading Record when they have read with you at home, it appears that many children are not reading at home at the moment and we would recommend that they read with you at least 3 times a week.  Reading books will be changed on a regular basis if we can see that they have been reading their books at home through the reading record being updated.

Willow Class (Nursery & Reception)

Reception children now have reading books and a reading record, please read with your child at home.

Next week, the children have chosen to learn about ‘Stick Man’

We will be looking at:

Similarities and differences in twigs and trees; seasons and how trees change in the year; mark making with twigs; making our own stick families and talking about our families.  We will be collecting sticks and twigs so if you have any at home, please bring them in! (but not too big, please)

Maths – Reception children will be counting back from 20, reading numbers, comparing quantities of numbers to 20 – which number is bigger or smaller? and ordering numbers to 20.

Nursery children will be counting sticks and ordering stick in length.

Both Nursery and Reception will use sticks to create letters, shapes and numbers

Can you try this at home and send in any photos via Tapestry.

Can they also look at what is made out of wood at home?  We would really appreciate all the children to contribute to their Tapestry journals with photos or a quick note from you, thank you.

Reception Phonics – we will look at ‘ar, or, ur’ over the next few weeks.

Next week we will be concentrating on Julia Donaldson’s book ‘The Princess and the Wizard’

We will be looking at:

Princesses and Wizards, sequencing and re-enacting the story, making magic spells, explore different colours and animals which match into their surroundings (i.e. camouflage).

Maths – we will be learning about 3d shapes – could you ask your child to hunt for and sort some items/objects at home into their different shape categories (i.e. cubes, cuboids, spheres, cylinders and cones, etc.) – please can you take pictures, etc. and upload them to your child’s Tapestry account.

Phonics – we will look at oa, oo, ar, or, ur over the next few weeks.

French Homework – For the last few weeks in French lessons, we have worked on simple recipes, looking at words for ingredients and verbs for instructions.  Please find attached some simplified recipes in French to try at home over half-term.  (Unknown or forgotten words can be looked up in a French/English translation dictionary).

ICT Homework

To support our use of the Chromebooks, please can you encourage your child to practise typing on a QWERTY keyboard.

We have looked at the typing games here this week:

English Homework:

Year 2 only – the children will be bringing home a practice SATs Reading paper, please can you let your child do the paper by themselves as much as possible as this will be good indicator of how well they work independently and help us to assess their ability and give additional help/guidance where necessary.  If you have had to help them in any way, please can you email the office to explain what you needed to do to assist them in completing the paper, thank you.

Year 1 only – over half-term when you are out and about, take a photo of a non-residential building (i.e. church, manor house, unusual building, etc.) and then make your own sketch/drawing of the building.  Remember to write the name of the building on the back of your picture.

Topic Homework – research a particular Tsunami and make a leaflet/booklet (format is your choice).  Include as many facts as you can find, including the cause and impact of the event, where it took place, when, were there casualties, and any other interesting facts you think would be important to the reader.

Topic Homework – following on from our trip to Waddesdon Manor yesterday, take a look around your garden and list 5 plants/trees you can find.  You can also draw them, describe them and even do some research about each (e.g. if they flower and when; do they have fruit; what colour are the flower/leaves; and any other interesting facts or information you want to record).

Reading homework – Mr Latif would like the children to have another go at writing a small summary in their homework books/or on a sheet of paper about what they have read in their school reading books over the weekend and during the week.

They can focus on a particular page or several pages or even the whole book; describing characters, locations; explaining what has happened; what they think may happen next; whether they enjoyed the story/book; and anything else they can think to write about.

An extension of the homework this week is to write some questions that parents or staff could ask them which they feel would be able to answer (e.g. what is the name of the main character, can you describe the front cover, etc…)

Sheet stuck in book for completion – Letter Openings

In class, we are reading and studying ‘The Train to Impossible places’.  The train delivers letters and parcels to all 5 corners of the Union.

On the sheet provided, try to think of different ways to start a letter and different people and characters you could send a letter to.

Can you remember some of the characters from our story?  They love receiving letters!

Are there members of your family you could write to?

Is there someone famous or important you want to write to?

We will use these letter openings on FRIDAY 18 OCTOBER, so please make sure your book is returned by then at the latest.

Can you think of a place that makes you feel very happy?  It might be a real place or somewhere you have invented in your imagination.  Somewhere you visit a lot or maybe it is a place you want to go to.

On the sheet of paper in your book, please draw/colour/collage/paint/use photographs to make a picture of your happy place.  You can use a photograph of a place you know or make it up, using your imagination.

The only rules are it must be A4 and flat enough to fit in your homework book (no 3D models please!)

We will be using these pictures regularly for some of our mindfulness sessions so it is important they are returned NO LATER THAN TUESDAY 1st OCTOBER.
